Operating Software Downloads, Instructions, and References

Short Installation Instructions (see the manual for more detailed information):

° Click here to download the Model 309 Utility for Windows and Windows NT (new version as of 24 October 2000).
° Select and download the proper Operating Software for your instrument. See below.
° Connect your Model 308 or 309 serial port to any serial port on your computer. (Need network cables?)
° Run the Model 309 Utility on your computer (it supports the Model 308 too). It will automatically find your instrument (unless). (If a warning dialog concerning reading hold parameters appears, simply dismiss it - it won't affect operations.)
° From the "Instrument" menu, select "Install Operating Software"
° Navigate to the Operating Software you just downloaded and follow the simple prompts.
° Caution: If an instrument is running Operating Software version x.63 or higher, don't install version x.62 or lower into it, because a downgrade transition from x.63 or higher to x.62 or lower will result in the loss of calibration data. You may install the same version or a higher version regardless of the version number. But don't install a downgrade transition from x.63 or higher to x.62 or lower.

Choosing the proper Operating Software version range for your instrument:

Find your instrument's serial number in one of the lists below, and use the version range indicated.

Optionally, if your instrument is already connected to your computer via their serial ports, launch the Model 309 Utility. When it finds your instrument, it will display it's Operating Software version in the lower right corner of the virtual instrument (except very early OS versions). Upgrade with the same range (1.xx, 3.xx or 4.xx).

If your instrument doesn't function properly or performance is degraded after installing new Operating Software, you may have installed the wrong version range. Review your selection and install the correct version.

Operating Software: These lists are fully up to date (the last serial number change was on 17 January 2008). Serial numbers exclude leading zeros:

Click here to download version 1.65 for the following serial numbers: 291, 296, 297, 302, 303, 304, 305, 308, 312, 313, 326, 331, 336, 389. These instruments are eligible for a substantial free hardware upgrade.

Click here to download version 3.65 for the following serial numbers: 294, 295, 299, 300, 307, 308.5, 315, 318, 322, 332, 333, 335, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 349, 350, 351, 352, 353, 354, 355, 356, 357, 358, 359, 360, 361, 362, 363, 364, 365, 366, 367, 368, 369, 370, 373, 374, 375, 376, 377, 378, 379, 380, 382, 383, 384, 385, 386, 387, 440

Click here to download version 4.65 for all other Model 308 or 309 serial numbers.

Earlier Operating Software versions (uncertified, and highly discouraged): 1.61, 3.61, 4.61, 1.62, 3.62, 4.62, 1.63, 3.63, 4.63, 1.64, 3.64, 4.64

The latest Operating Software, version x.65, provides an improved OS version display in addition to the initialization error corrections provided by version x.64. The initialization errors caused crashes on power up or during the first test after power up in some instruments.

These crashes were accompanied by type 2 or type 4 error displays, or displays latched into an unusable state, or other crashes. Version x.63 refinements, including correction of a rare internal zero crossing detection error condition, and more refined storage of internal parameters, are retained.

You also get the reading hold feature, added in version x.62, which displays the last reading, the maximum reading, or the minimum reading, for both impedance and test current, displaying on the main readout, for a limited time or indefinitely. You may specify which reading to hold independently for impedance and current, and the hold time. For example, you could have your instrument hold the maximum impedance and the minimum current (these are now used as the initial settings). You'll need to use the Model 309 Utility to change these settings, but once changed the instrument will remember them in flash as it does all other settings and preferences.

This Operating Software incorporates the correction of an algorithm flaw which can cause current reading inaccuracies under certain circumstances in Operating Software versions prior to x.58, and the correction of an over range indication flaw which prevented an over range indication when in the highest resolution mode. It also provides a Y2K ready indicator, improved settings and calibration mode functions, and many other important performance and ergonomic refinements.

Network cables: Complete sets of network cables and adapters have been delivered to all customers either with their original instrument shipment or by a later shipment, or in combination. If you've misplaced your network cables or desire additional sets, you may email us with your instrument's serial number, your shipping name and address, your invoice address, and a purchase order number for a replacement set(s) shipped promptly via First Class Mail for $15.00 total per set. A set of network cables includes one each of the following: A Mini DIN-8 to Mini DIN-8 Macintosh hardware handshake AppleTalk serial cable, a Mini DIN-8 to DB-25M hardware handshake serial network cable for PCs (also known as a "Mac to modem" cable), a DB-25F to DB-25F adapter (gender changer), and a DB-25M to DB-9F adapter. This set should provide everything you need to network to either a Macintosh or a PC. You can also acquire these items from local sources.

Hardware version 2.1 network cards may require a hardware patch:

Unless already accomplished, older hardware version 2.1 network cards should receive a modification to the SP333 IC connections as follows: Pin 1 patched to pad 28, pin 28 patched to pad 1. In rare cases, this simple patch might be required before the Model 309 Utility application can find your instrument. Many of these network cards have already been modified. If you prefer, remove the network card and send it to us and we'll update it for you promptly for free. Your network card's hardware version number is printed in copper on the top side, upper left corner, and reads "Network Card CB VX.X" or "Network Card CB VX.XX". Only hardware version 2.1 network cards require this patch - all others are proper in original form.

28 December 2007: Our records suggest that the network cards last seen in the following instrument serial numbers have not yet been patched. But since network cards can be swapped from one instrument to another, and some customers may have installed patches without our being aware of it, and due to limitations in our data, this list is not certain. Possibly not yet patched: 294, 295, 308.5, 315, 318, 322, 341, 342, 343, 349, 350, 352, 356, 364, 366, 367, 373, 374, 378, 382, 386, 440
